Heads of BRICS competition authorities agreed to step up cooperation and knowledge-sharing on competition issues, including in renewable energy markets.
Heads of competition authorities from BRICS countries agreed to strengthen cooperation and information-sharing on competition enforcement. The joint statement was adopted following a meeting of the heads of BRICS competition authorities held on August 8 in Udaipur, India.
The meeting was organised by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) as part of India’s BRICS Chairship 2026. Representatives of the BRICS competition authorities discussed recent developments in competition law and policy, significant enforcement initiatives and emerging challenges in their respective jurisdictions.
Competition in renewable energy markets was among the key issues discussed. The CCI presented the findings of a joint BRICS study on the emerging competition landscape in the renewable energy sector. The study examines evolving competition dynamics across BRICS jurisdictions and identifies areas for future cooperation.
The Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities adopted a Joint Statement titled “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in Renewable Energy Markets.” The statement reflects the shared commitment of BRICS competition authorities to promote competitive, innovative, resilient and sustainable renewable energy markets, as well as to enhance knowledge-sharing in addressing emerging competition issues associated with the global energy transition.
In her inaugural address, CCI Chairperson Ravneet Kaur stressed the shared responsibility of BRICS competition authorities to preserve and promote competitive markets that foster efficiency, consumer welfare, innovation and opportunities for businesses to compete on merit.
She also highlighted the increasingly cross-border nature of digital markets and emerging technologies. According to Kaur, sustained cooperation and knowledge-sharing among BRICS competition authorities will be essential for developing informed, effective and future-ready approaches to competition enforcement.
Referring to the global transition towards renewable energy and sustainability, Kaur said continued cooperation among BRICS competition authorities could help foster fair and competitive renewable energy markets while advancing the shared objectives of sustainable growth and energy security. She also stressed that, amid evolving market dynamics and emerging enforcement challenges, competition law interventions should remain principled, evidence-based and firmly anchored in the core objectives of competition law.
Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) briefed participants on preparations for the Xth BRICS International Competition Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2027.
The meeting concluded with the Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities reaffirming their commitment to continued cooperation, dialogue and knowledge-sharing to promote effective competition enforcement and address emerging challenges in increasingly interconnected markets.
