FAS to Investigate Arbidol Coronovirus Claims


On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities informed the World Health Organization about an outbreak of a previously unknown type of pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, located in the central part of the country. As experts have established, the causative agent of the disease is a new type of coronavirus - 2019-nCoV, which can be transmitted from person to person.

According to the latest data from the State Health Committee of the PRC, the total number of patients with pneumonia caused by a new type of coronavirus in China is over 5000 people. Outside of mainland China, infections were reported in several countries including Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, Vietnam, Singapore, Nepal, France, Australia, Malaysia others.

According to RIA News, recently, The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of the Russian Federation received a complaint from a citizen about the radio advertisement of the drug "Arbidol", which stated that it was effective against coronavirus, the agency will evaluate the veracity of this advertisement.

The press-service of FAS has issued the following commentary on the issue - "The FAS of the Russian Federation received a complaint about the advertisement of the drug" Arbidol "from a citizen".
The drug's instructions say that amongst other illnesses, it can be used in the fight against coronaviruses. However, the claim that the drug can be used to prevent or treat 2019-nCoV coronavirus requires an additional assessment. FAS is preparing the necessary requests to clarify the circumstances, including the manufacturer of the drug.
